A South Korean man named Oh Won-gi has testified during the trial of Chun Doo-hwan, former president, that he witnessed Chun board a military helicopter to Gwangju before soldiers openly fired on civilians during the Gwangju Democratization Movement of May 1980, contradicting Chun’s claim that he was not Gwangju at the time of the shootings and had no knowledge of them. Oh’s testimony corroborates the testimony of an intelligence officer dispatched to Gwangju from the US Army’s 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, and is expected to serve as key evidence in the prosecution. Oh was in the Air Force at the time as a driver when he witnessed Chun aboard a military helicopter.
