Workers at counters in South Korean supermarkets (primarily women) remain standing on an average of 6.5 hours each day they work. The results of a survey conducted by the Korean Mart Labor Union on 5,177 supermarket workers were revealed at a press conference in Seoul on June 26. Among the respondents, 4,999 were women; 65.7% were in their 50s or older. Despite recent legislation requiring supermarkets to provide counter workers with chairs, workers still stand for inordinate amounts of time during their work day.
