The number of South Koreans under 40 moving to rural areas to farm and fish is gradually increasing. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), 49,330 people moved from cities to rural areas in 2018, a decrease of 5.1% from the previous year. However, MAFRA explained that the decrease was due to the inordinate increase of 2018 coupled with the effects of a declining population. Among the people who migrated to rural areas in 2018, 49.1% of them were under 40. The photo shows a scene from the film “Little Forest.” (Hankyoreh archives)
