Swedish student and activist Greta Thunberg, 16, who took time off from school to hold demonstrations outside the Swedish Parliament to demand bolder action on climate change, has started to influence students in South Korea. A collective of environmental civic groups gathered outside Seoul’s Franciscan Education Center. One of the demonstrators, Oh Yeon-jae, a student of 17 years old, described herself as an “endangered species.” “I didn’t come out here to demonstrate in spite of my age,” she said. “I’m demonstrating because of it.” Oh added that people only talk about animals like polar bears when it comes to animal species endangered by climate change, but they rarely talk about humans be susceptible to becoming endangered. In August 2018, Oh and other students formed a collective of student activists that demand bolder action from the South Korean government regarding climate change.
