The mother of South Korean President Moon Jae-in passed away on Oct. 29. Kang Han-ok died in a Busan hospital after a long battle with physical illness. Kang’s funeral was held the next day at Namcheon Catholic Cathedral in Busan, Moon’s hometown. Moon, saying he wanted a quiet funeral among family, announced that he would not be accepting the funeral flowers traditionally offered in Korean as a condolence gesture. A funeral flower arrangement send by Sohn Hak-kyu, leader of the Bareunmirae Party, was even rejected at the cathedral’s door. Moon and his family also did not accept condolence visits, including that of Lee Ho-cheol, a secretary under former President Roh Moo-hyun and a friend of Moon’s.
