Hyundai Heavy Industries held a launch ceremony for the newest frigate in the Republic of Korea Navy at its shipyard in Ulsan on Nov. 11. 2,800-ton FGG-II Seoul is equipped with advanced sonar and weaponry, including guided missiles, for countering submarines. It is also capable of carrying a helicopter. As a ship designed to counter submarine operations, its new hybrid propulsion system reduces the amount of noise the vessel makes in the water. The FGG-II Seoul is the third ship in a batch of vessels being built to replace aging frigates. It is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in early 2021.
