Real Meter survey shows eight in ten respondents are in favor of a peace treaty with North Korea
Eight out of ten South Koreans said they support signing a peace agreement to end the armistice conditions that have prevailed on the Korean Peninsula for the past 65 years, a recent survey shows. The polling organization Real Meter released findings on Apr. 19 from a survey of 501 adult South Koreans the day before. The results showed 78.7% of respondents saying they “support” South and North Korea signing a peace agreement, compared to just 14.5% who said they “oppose” it. “Respondents overwhelmingly expressed support across all segments, whether they supported for the ruling or opposition party, identified as progressive or conservative, resided in the Yeongnam (southeast) or Honam (southwest) region, or belonged to a younger or older age group,” Real Meter said. The survey took place amid high hopes for the relaxing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with US President Donald Trump stating on Apr. 17 that South and North Korea have his “blessing” to discuss an end to the Korean War and the Blue House stating that it hopes to see an “agreement to ban hostile activities between South and North” at an upcoming inter-Korean summit on Apr. 27.
