The Defense Ministry announced on Apr. 23 that it would shut off loudspeakers which were blaring K-pop music and propaganda broadcasts into North Korea. The decision was made in order to further ease tensions and provide a peaceful atmosphere in advance of this week’s inter-Korean summit, scheduled for Apr. 27 at the Panmunjeom Joint Security Area. “We look forward to this action ending the mutual slandering and propaganda between South and North, and that it will result in a new beginning for peace,” the Ministry said in a statement. The loudspeakers had been restarted in Jan. 2016 following the North’s fourth nuclear test.
