US President Donald Trump (Reuters)

“We haven’t given up anything and they have agreed to denuclearization,” president boasts

On Apr. 22, US President Donald Trump responded to North Korea’s announcement that it was halting nuclear weapon and missile testing by tweeting that “we haven’t given up anything [to the North] & they have agreed to denuclearization.”

In his tweet that morning, Trump mentioned a broadcast by Chuck Todd, a news anchor on NBC: “Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd of Fake News NBC just stated that we have given up so much in our negotiations with North Korea, and they have given up nothing. Wow, we haven’t given up anything & they have agreed to denuclearization [. . .], site closure, & no more testing!”

But Trump continues to put pressure on the North: “We are a long way from conclusion on North Korea, maybe things will work out, and maybe they won’t - only time will tell.” In the same tweet, Trump reiterated that he is doing better than the presidents who preceded him: “The work I am doing now should have been done a long time ago!”

Shortly after North Korea announced that it would be halting nuclear tests and ICBM test launches and shutting down its test site at Punggye Village on Apr. 20, Trump welcomed the announcement in two tweets, writing, “This is very good news for North Korea and the World - big progress!”
