On June 15, 2000, the leaders of South and North Korea met for the first time and signed the June 15 Joint Declaration. This year’s anniversary of the event was shortly after the Apr. 27 Inter-Korean Summit in Panmunjeom and the June 12 North Korea-US Summit in Singapore, but political and administrative circumstances made officials on both sides decide not to hold a joint commemorative event. The contents of the declaration, however, were publicly displayed in Seoul Plaza on June 15, during an event to commemorate the joint declaration in the spirit of peace and unification.
