North Korea’s official government paper, the Rodong Sinmun, usually indulges in anti-American rhetoric every June 25, the official starting date of the Korean War (known in North Korea as the War of Korean Liberation) in 1950. Phrases like “the American invasion of Korea” and editorials in opposition to US involvement during the war, which are routine for this time of year, were also noticeably absent. This change in the conventional patterns of North Korea’s press indicates the North Korean regime’s willingness to contribute to an atmosphere of reconciliation and dialogue rather than open hostility. The above photo shows Col. Cho Yong-geun of the South Korean delegation and North Korean Col. Om Chang-nam during the first colonel-grade inter-Korean military talks in more than seven years at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) office in the South Korean city of Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
