After an inter-Korean joint event celebrating the launch of tourism to the Mt. Kumgang area 20 years ago on Nov. 18-19, North Korea explicitly communicate its wishes to revive tourism to Mt. Kumgang. Ri Taek-gon, vice chief of North Korea’s Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, expresses his hopes that tourism to the area be resumed according to agreements made in the September Pyongyang Declaration. Hyundai Group Chairman Hyun Jeong-eun, who was in attendance, responded by indicating tourism will resume within three months of UN sanctions being eased. Tourism to the area has been put on hold since 2008, when a South Korean tourist in the area was fatally shot.
