On Dec. 12, South and North Korea’s militaries began mutual inspections of each other’s DMZ guard posts (GPs) in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, that were demolished as part of a probationary dismantlement program to implement the Sept. 19 Comprehensive Military Agreement (CMA). This was the first instance of the two sides inspecting each other’s military facilities since the Korean Peninsula was split following the 1953 Armistice Agreement. Both sides began the process of verifying that all the GPs slotted for demolition had in fact been entirely cleared of military personnel and equipment and destroyed. (photo pool)
