The South Korean Ministry of National Defense has issued a public apology to victims of the Jeju Apr. 3 Massacre, 71 years after the tragedy occurred. The Apr. 3 Massacre refers to an anti-communist suppression campaign in which government troops killed and tortured thousands of innocent civilians, many of whom were imprisoned without trial and/or executed. Although victims and their families have been calling for a government apology and compensation for decades, this marks the first official apology provided by South Korean military authorities. An apology was provided by President Moon Jae-in last year.
