The US State Department announced on May 3 that US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun will visit South Korea from May 9 to 10 to discuss “efforts to advance the final, fully verified denuclearization [FFVD] of North Korea.” Biegun is expected to meet with his South Korean counterpart Lee Do-hoon, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, and hold a meeting of the South Korea-US working group on ways to resume North Korea-US dialogue. The South Korean side is expected to propose methods of providing humanitarian aid to North Korea via international organizations amid the current food crisis. Ahead of his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month, US President Donald Trump said, “Well, we are discussing certain humanitarian things right now, and I’m okay with that, to be honest.” Biegun will be stopping in Japan on May 7-8 before coming to Korea.
