Shut down in 1974 to prevent North Korean spies from infiltrating the island, the lighthouse at Yeonpyeong Island is being turned back on May 17 after 45 years of darkness. According to the city of Incheon, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will be holding a ceremony to celebrate the lighthouse’s relighting on the evening of May 17, with Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Moon Seong-hyeok and Park Jun-ha, vice mayor for administrative affairs of Incheon, in attendance. The lighthouse’s relighting is part of a larger effort to establish an inter-Korean fishing zone near the Northern Limit Line (NLL). (Kang Jae-hoon, staff photographer)
