A long serving symbol of war and the Korean Peninsula’s division, the South Korean military’s DMZ guard post near Goseong, Gangwon County, has been designated an official cultural heritage site. The guard post was established in 1953 following the Korean Armistice Agreement, becoming the first guard post on the South Korean side of the DMZ. The Goseon guard post designated for preservation after an inter-Korean agreement in September 2018 dictated the probationary withdrawal and dismantlement of 10 other guard posts on each side.
